Bad breath or halitosis, is well known by all - bad smell that sometimes we find ourselves in the breath of a person near by. It is familiar and which we all know is common, but it is common? There have been very few halitosis social studies to answer this question. Indeed, the condition was more or less ignored by the medical community and until the end of 20th century social sciences.
The cause of halitosis was not clearly identified until 1960, when Dr. j. Tonzetich described the production of compounds of volatile sulfur in the mouth. These compounds are produced by anaerobic (oxygen up hating) bacteria live in the mouth and expelled in breathing. After this discovery, the researchers were able to identify which bacteria were the primary producers of VSC and locate where they were living in the oral cavity. All this knowledge accumulating guided efforts to produce effective halitosis treatment, but did not contribute much to social studies of halitosis.
There is no doubt that bad breath can have a devastating effect on a person's social life. Others avoid close contact with a person afflicted by what you will not have to endure the smell. Close friendship and dating to be very difficult. A person who knows that he or she has bad breath can retire and avoid contact with other people. In fact, the fear of having bad breath has been Mint Nations sucking, citizens of chewing gum and even halitophobics, who believe that they have bad breath when really don't them. In recent years, doctors and dentists have turned more attention to the problems of those who suffer from halitosis and a few have made halitosis social studies to find out more about how it affects the population.
At the end, are not yet sufficient statistics to allow definitive conclusions, but halitosis social studies suggest that almost 25% of people suffer from bad breath at some point in their lives, with numbers higher in the older age groups. A study found that approximately 50% of older people have morning breath. Design study differ - in order to gather reliable statistics on the prevalence of halitosis, researchers need to agree on a standard definition of the condition and reproducible means of measuring it. Halitosis social studies the social impact of the condition are still to come.
